Emerald Ash Borers

Emerald Ash Borers confirmed in Colorado!
The Colorado Department of Agriculture has confirmed the presence of Emerald Ash Borers in Colorado on September 27, 2013. As this insect has done back East, it is expected to devastate Ash trees all across Colorado.
It is highly recommended that all high-value Ash trees be treated ASAP!
As has been observed back East, prevention is key to survival! Once a tree is successfully attacked, it is too late!
Tree injections are the best way to protect your trees and Ross Tree Company is the Colorado leader in tree injection treatments. We have the experience and tools to treat your trees properly to protect them from this devastating insect.

MTN Pine Beetle Control

Mountain pine beetles mainly attack the trunks of Ponderosa pines and Scotch pines in the Denver metro area. They have been known to attack other pines, but to a lesser extent.

Trees that are under attack will show signs of weakness such as discolored needles. Close inspection of the trunk will confirm if MTN pine beetle is the cause. Sap oozing from the trunk that looks a little like popcorn will be observed. This “pitching” is the tree trying to prevent the beetle from gaining entry to the tree.

Mountain pine beetle numbers are growing throughout the Front Range. Preventive treatments are highly recommended due to the high mortality rate of infected trees.

There are now two different treatments to choose from: 1) the traditional trunk spray, twice per year, or 2) a trunk injection that protects for two years. Both treatments will also control Ips engraver beetles. Please call or e-mail for a free property evaluation.

IPS Beetle Control

The IPS Engraver beetles attack both spruce and pine trees. Trees that are under attack will begin to die from the top down during the following season after being attacked.
Most trees will not survive an IPS beetle attack. Preventive treatments are strongly recommended.

Leaf-Feeding Insect Control

Leaf Feeding Insects and Mites

Aphids are the insects that wreak havoc on many species of trees and shrubs during the growing season. They can have several generations each year. Their honey dew (excrement) often makes the leaves or needles appear “shiny” or “wet”. They damage the leaves, causing them to stop energy production. This in turn weakens the trees, making them more susceptible to other more damaging insects and disease.

When infected trees are near a patio or parking area their honey dew will drip onto patio furniture and cars and can be difficult to remove.

Mites are dry heat lovers. They will normally be found in areas that offer this along with a host tree, shrub, or turf. South facing exposures are at greater risk than other areas in your landscape. Mites are most often detected only after damage is observed. If you suspect mites are damaging your plant life treatment is recommended due to the damage they can cause in a single growing season.

There are now three different treatments to choose from:
1) Inspect and spray only the trees affected at the time of treatment. This treatment is performed up to three times a year.

2) Systemic soil injection/drench. This treatment is performed in the spring or late fall. It can only be used on trees with an adequate root zone. One treatment will protect for the growing season.

3) A trunk injection that will protect for the growing season. Please call or e-mail for a free property evaluation.
