Where do all of the Insects go during the Winter months?
Have you ever wondered where those pesky insects go when the cold of winter sets in? The answer may surprise you. Unlike many birds, they don’t fly south! Actually most of them are either on, in, or near the trees they damage, just waiting for spring to return. Most aphids and mites over-winter in the cracks and crevices in the bark. Some are in the soil at the base of the tree, while boring insects over-winter inside the tree as larva. All of them just waiting for spring, to emerge and wreack havoc on their host tree! Late fall through winter is a great time to control their numbers for the following growing season.
There are two very good treatments that can be applied during the “dormant” season that will help control most of those pesky insects:
1) Dormant Oil Treatments: Dormant oil is a fantastic product that is sprayed directly on the bark of trees. As it reaches the cracks and crevices of the tree it coats the insects and their eggs, causing suffocation and lowering the numbers that will emerge during the following growing season. Dormant oil treatments can be applied from late fall through early spring, before bud break.
2) Systemic Injections: Systemic injections are injected into the soil around the root zone of the tree. The root system takes in the treatment and moves it throughout the tree’s vascular system. This treatment will protect most trees from aphids, scale, and some boring insects for the entire growing season. Systemic injections can be applied in the fall through early spring.
